PHENYTOIN AND THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
In order to evaluate the effects of phenytoin on the reproductive system of rats in detail, 60 male rats were divided equally into 6 groups: 1-5 received 10 mg/kg/day phenytoin IP for 1,2,3,4 and 5 weeks, respectively. However, group 5 did not receive any phenytoin for the last 5th week. The control group (group 6) did not receive any treatment. The results revealed that phenytoin does not have any effect on body weight, weight of testes, seminal vesicle and prostate, serum testosterone and sperm count taken from left and right vas deferenses. However, the percentage of total motile sperm and sperm with full and sluggish motility decreased and the percentage of low motile sperm increased in all experimental groups. Nevertheless, phenytoin caused atrophy and hypoplasia in seminiferous tubules and not Leydig cells. These pathological changes were dose-dependent and more pronounced in the left testis. But phenytoin caused more changes in sperm count and motility of the right testis. This phenomenon was discussed i n relation t o the existence of asymmetrical control b y the hypothalamus, and compensation of the left testis. In summary, it could be concluded that phenytoin affected the seminiferous tubules directly and decreased the total number of motile sperm. It was also discussed that these effects are not reversible after termination of injection.

متن کاملThe Reproductive System and Development
The male reproductive system includes the gonads (testes), a series of specialized ducts (the epididymis, ductus deferens, ejaculatory duct, and urethra), accessory glands (the seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands), and the external genitalia (penis and scrotum). The female reproductive system includes the gonads (ovaries), derivatives of an embryonic system of ducts (the uterin...

Purpose: Previous studies have been shown that electromagnetic fields (EMF) can affect on functional activity of the female mice reproductive system. The aim of this study was to evaluated the effect of low frequency of EMF on histopathological changes of young male mice reproductive system. Materials and Methods: Eighteen male balb/c mice (6 week ages) were divided -at random into 3 groups of...
متن کاملPnm-9: Association between Air Pollution and Reproductive System Functions
Background The highly sensitive period of preimplantation development represents that embryo is very vulnerable to exogenous agents. Many of the developmental abnormalities may arise from the inevitable maternal periconceptional exposures to toxic substances in the environment which may threaten reproductive capability and pregnancy outcomes. In this article, an overview of the association betw...
متن کاملA Review of The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology Embryo Grading System and Proposed Modification
The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) method of embryo grading is unique, simple, and widely practiced, and its use has been mandatory for SART membership programs since 2010. Developed by SART in 2006, the current embryo grading system categories, “good, fair, and poor,” are limited because they do not describe the best 1-2 embryos in the interest of keeping pace with the shi...

Background Chlorpromazine (CPZ), an antipsychotic drug, is associated with increased risk of sexual dysfunction through increasing prolactin levels. The current study evaluates the effect of CPZ-induced hyperprolactinemia on ovarian follicular growth, gonadotropins, and alteration of ovarian source hormones. MaterialsAndMethods In this experimental study, animals were divided into four groups, ...
